THESE WORKSHOPS HAPPENED IN 2021!

I am leaving this page up as a record…

In the summer of 2020, as the pandemic forced us to forge new relationships with digital audio, I began a series of open Sunday night zoom meetings for musicians to discuss audio techniques. People from all over the world and from a wide range of backgrounds started showing up every week - people like a musical theater composer from Singapore, a teenage songwriter from Queens, a jazz clarinetist from Rio making electronic music on a tablet, to name just a few. As we shared and discussed our work in progress, these sessions became much more than a place to talk about audio. They became a forum where musicians of different ages and experience levels could connect and form new creative relationships, where musicians could encounter new ideas about music and sound, and where the isolation of music-making in the pandemic could go away for a few hours.

This year, I will again be hosting weekly Sunday night meetings - with a new approach. Each week will feature a special guest artist who I think represents a unique perspective on music and technology. From jazz masters to film composers, electronic musicians and studio owners, these guests will share real-world knowledge about how they make music today. Every week should be a unique opportunity to explore the art of music and sound.

I am very pleased to announce this summer’s guests:

July 11 Melvin Gibbs - bassist, producer, writer (Arto Lindsay, Rollins Band, Sonny Sharrock, etc.)
July 18 Kris Davis - pianist, composer, label director, and Associate Program Director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice
July 25 Eric Gorfain - violinist, arranger, composer for film and tv (Sam Phillips, Nick Cave, Cassandra Wilson, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)
August 1 Tyler Gilmore aka Blank.Forms - electronic musician, sound designer, internet synth/tape/effects guru
August 8 Jason Moran - pianist, composer, visual and multimedia artist
August 15 Stephanie Economou - Hollywood composer
August 29 Charmaine Lee - experimental vocalist, sound artist
September 5 Joe Branciforte - electronic composer, recording engineer, owner of Greyfade Studios, Mount Vernon, NY.

How it works: Workshops take place on zoom, Sunday nights at 8pm eastern time. The workshops are open to all, but space is limited. In order to attend, please fill out the form below. After filling out the form, you will receive an email with detailed information about the workshop. There is a $15 ($10 for students) suggested donation to attend, paid per session. Advance registration is required to attend - please sign up by 12pm Sunday (Eastern time) in order to receive zoom link and workshop info.

Sharing music: All attendees are invited to share work, but due to time limitations, there will be a limited number of sharing opportunities per session. I will do my best to make sure that all attendees who want to share will have a chance to do so, but unfortunately I can’t guarantee that everyone will get a slot, or a slot in the week of their choice. If you know you want to share work during a particular session, please indicate that in the form below. It’s OK if you don’t know which week you want to present and/or change your mind, and there will be opportunities to sign up later. I will allocate sharing slots on a first-come-first-served basis while also taking into account relevance to the guest artist’s work and any other factors I deem important.

Questions? They may be answered by the email you will receive after registering, but please send me an email if you need more information.
